I took the old drums off and the ford 8.8 Rotors hit the backing plate and there is still a 1/8 of an inch to go before it sits on the flange. HELP! will ZJ rotors fit better? What else can I do?

I know that the zj backing plates and rotors will work on a D44, I've seen it done before. On TJ D44. But if your using a D44 from an 86 CJ then the lug pattern is gonna be 5 on 5.5 instead of 5 on 4.5 like the ZJ. Im pretty sure that the hole in center of the rotor will have to be enlarged because the face of the axle has that area that sticks out for the center of the drum. Along with the rotor having to be re drilled for 5 on 5.5 lug pattern. If you want I can take a wheel off mine and take any measurements you need. Or you can go to autoparts store buy one rotor for a 98 ZJ and see if it will work. Then return it.

Found this for you too. I really like their idea for an e-brake on the drive shaft instead of the wheel. Makes it really easy to use almost any caliper/rotor combo that way. Even fronts off a car or truck. Check it out. Way cheaper in long run to convert. http://jeepsunlimited.com/forums//showt ... p?t=392709

Here is another thread from pirate 4x4. Guy claims this cost under $150 and some time. Looks good to me. And eliminates backing plates all together. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/jeep-har ... ry-mo.html

I think I came up with a good way to fix my problem 1/4 wheel spacers on the inside of the brake rotor. But guess what they need to have a lip ground down to fit. All this griding almost there. :brickwall:

From what I can gather the 86 CJ7 Dana 44 is not like the XJ and TJ dana 44.

It's on it's own.

Cool glad you came up with a fix. Your correct, the 86 CJ D44 is totally different then the newer ones. But way better than having an AMC 20 or Dana35 junk axle under it. A lot of guys like the 8.8 but im not a fan myself. I would prefer a 9" if im going to use a Ford axle. There are many more part choices. One of the best axles for aftermarket support in my opinion, & proven strength. Can be built as crazy or modest as you desire.

It's been hot so after a 10 hour day it's hard, but I got it all set up with tires back on and now I have to bleed the brakes.

Sweet brother! Post some pics if you get a chance. Otherwise I'll probably see it at trailfest if your attending this year.

I think I need to now run a ZJ proportioning valve now.

My CJ has front Disc but had rear drums and I have a booster.

Or I could pull out the O ring?

I didn't change the one on my YJ when I put the disc on back. And it works fine. Ive heard other people say it has to be changed. Wilwood makes an adjustable one aftermarket that ive heard good things about. Summit Racing, or Jegs has them.
