Post My PC fights cancer 24/7
My PC fights cancer 24/7 by being part of Stanford U's 'Folding @ Home' project.

This is a distributed computing project where 1.3 million folks are running background jobs on their PCs. Stanford collects the data which is used for cancer research. The name "Folding" refers to the way proteins assemble themselves, or "fold."

The folding program gets out of the way when you use your PC. There is very little impact. I leave mine running, just switch off the monitor and walk away.

Installation instructions (The 'Systray version' instuctions are for Windows PCs & easiest to follow):
http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/cgi-bin/edit/English/WinUNIGuide

Home page for more information:

If you want to, join my team. I found this through ford-trucks.com, so I'm a member of the Ford Truck Enthusiasts, Team Id 53449. Just enter that team # and your screen name during the install.

Please feel free to discuss here.

Years ago I used to help with the SETI@Home project, and since then I've moved on to this project. I have F@H running on my two computers at home about 99% of the time. My Windows PC has a high-powered Nvidia graphics card, and they have special high-performance clients that utilize modern Nvidia and ATI GPUs. For the non-savvy, a high-performance 3D graphics card can run circles around the most powerful CPUs in terms of raw performance.

A lot of people leave their computers on 24/7, and they sit idle most of the time. Might as well do something useful with all that spare CPU time sitting around.

Anyone interested in setting up a "Northeast Wheelers" team? I would say keep it organization free to see if we can get clubs outside NOVA to help out too.
