Post Re-gear for 33+?
I'm toying with the idea of going with 33x10.5x15" rubber when I need new tires. I've read that you need to regear for 33" and up. Is this a myth or a fact? Also been thinking about a brake upgrade with the larger rubber. Since my truck is my daily driver, and larger rubber weighs more, that means it would be harder to stop in an emergency.

I don't need new tires for at least 18 months, so any information would be much appreciated.

Need? No, since the truck will operate, move down the road, with what you have. Your perception of need also varies with where you are coming from, what tire size you have now. In general, it's a good idea to keep the engine rpm per mile near stock, but it's also not practical to swap gears when you go from 30's to 31's. So, what motor, what gears now, what tire size now?

Currently I'm running 31x10.5x15" (stock Gambler rims) with the 4.0L motor. Sock AX15 trans and Dana 35 rear with 3.73 gears.

That's only a 6% difference (33/31). The next smaller gear that would feel the same would be a 4.11, which is 10% different than you have now, so would be overcompensating for the tire change. With that small a number, I'd do the tires and see how it feels.

Alright, thanks Don. I'll have to see how my financial situation pans out for 2010. I won't near new tires for at least 18 months, so I do have some time. From the snow storm we just had I found out how having unlocked differentials could help a great deal in the snow. I almost got stuck, so maybe I'll look into getting locking gears as well.

I agree with Don. I am currently running 33x12.5x15 BFG MTs on my TJ with 3.73 gears and it's not too bad. On some highways I'll have to downshift to 4th, but the majority of the time I can hold my speed. I'm getting ready to go to 4.56 gears for when I put on 35s though.

I'm running 31x10.5" BFG All-Terrain TA KOs right now. They've served me well in the three years I've had them. Their snow traction is great, even on an unlocked truck like mine. Can't say I ever felt out of control, even in a 4WD slide from hammering the gas on too early from cornering.

I do a lot of driving with my truck, and since it's my daily driver, it involves a lot of short highway sections and mostly around town stuff. It seems that going with some 4.10s may be the best bet for future applications. I even consulted with my crazy Mustang buddy and he agrees. Granted that may change in the future and I may never get those bigger tires, but who knows. Good to do research early.

33's and 4.10 is a good combo. I ran 33's and 4.10's with my 4cyl and it seemed okay, then went to 4.88's.

I take it you have a Jeep of some late 90s early 00s vintage. You'll probably want (with the manual trans) to go with 4.11s or 4.56s for 33 inch tires. I ran 4.56s for years with 33s on and off road and that seemed right.
The other thing you want to think about, however, is the Dana 35. Frankly I'd start looking for an 8.8, 44, or 9 inch to swap in. 33s break Dana 35s, especially with a locker. Yes I know people get away with it but plenty of people get away with high risk behavior for quite awhile, and when the Dana 35 breaks its usually a catastrophic day ruining event for the whole group. I got away with a Dana 35 for a few years with 33s and was lucky that when it did break it only stripped teeth.

Carl, Ted is right. Waste of time regearing a D35. in another part of the fourm is a 8.8 for sale or buy a D44 or over kill with a D60. As for regearing. that 10 % is a big deal. I went from the stock 3.73 and 30's to 4.10 and 33's (equal rpm match) and it wasn't enough. With the lag of a larger tire and a lift I should of went with 4.56 or 4.88. Off road I have a 4:1 atlas so it is geared ok but on road it is a little dogish. Regear in a new axle and go right to the 35's.
My 2 cents
Joe
PS: I also have a manual tranny
